Obstetrics and gynecology

Dr Chantal Dubois

Dr. Chantal Dubois is a graduate of the Université de Sherbrooke, where she completed her specialization in Gynecology and Obstetrics in 2001. After briefly working at Centre Hospitalier Universitaire de Sherbrooke, she left for Switzerland in 2002. From 2003 to 2005, she practiced reproductive medicine at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire Vaudois in Lausanne. She then worked as the OBGYN Clinical Director at Hôpital Cantonal de Fribourg until April 2012. Now back in Quebec, she’s devoting herself to gynecology and obstetrics private practice to provide a more personalized approach to her patients.

Dr Dubois is currently the only gynecologist and obstetrician in Quebec to offer, among others, pregnancy follow-ups in private clinic. As a mother, she wishes to promote quality medicine that is more attentive to women.

Pelvic ultrasound

A pelvic ultrasound is a suprapubic ultrasound examination. It requires that the patient’s bladder be full. The patient must therefore drink approximately 500 ml of water 30 minutes before the scan.

Endovaginal ultrasound

During this test, a small probe is inserted into the vagina, providing an accurate, detailed image of the vaginal structures. To do the exam, the bladder must be empty. This ultrasound examination is usually painless.

Sonohysterography

An endovaginal ultrasound examination whereby a saline fluid in inserted into the uterus using a catheter. This test is used to study the uterine lining and uterine cavity as well as to detect polyps or fibroids in women.

Colposcopy, Biopsy, Cryotherapy

When a doctor finds abnormalities on a pap test results, they may suggest a colposcopy test, which can be done right here at the clinic. During the colposcopy, the gynecologist will use a microscope to examine the uterus and will take a sample (biopsy) to obtain a detailed histological analysis. In some cases, the doctor may suggest a liquid nitrogen treatment (cryotherapy).

Vulva clinic

Our gynecologists are concerned with caring for various vulvar disorders. Most treatments are done right here at the clinic. Don’t hesitate to book an appointment if you experience the following:

  • Vestibulodyni/Vulvodynia
  • Vaginismus
  • Condyloma
  • Cyst or abscess of the Bartholin’s gland (Bartholinitis)
  • IUD contraception

You must consider several factors prior to selecting your method of contraception. Although an IUD has mulitple advantages, you have to be sure this is right for you. If you finally decide on an intra-uterine device, our gynecologists can insert it on the spot. Moreover, your specialist will be able to advise you on the type of IUD that’s best for you: Mirena, Jay-Dess, or Liberté.

Woman’s health – Annual pap test

Gynecological exams should be done annually and include a breast and genital exam.

A pap test—or cytology-based test/smear—is a screening test for cervical cancer. With a few exceptions, this does not necessarily have to be done every year. This is still the best method for early detection of abnormal cells. When cell changes are detected early, they can be treated effectively before the condition worsens. This is why it is important to visit your gynecologist once a year.

In some cases, HPV screening (human papilloma virus) may also be done. HPV vaccination is another effective way to prevent cervical cancer. The vaccine is available at our clinics. Our specialists will be happy to answer all your questions.

Obstetrics - Pregnancy and post-partum follow-up

At Avenir MD, we focus on prevention and patient information at our pregnancy follow-ups, both before and after childbirth. We assess your health status and risk factors even before you become pregnant. These assessments are done during our pre-pregnancy obstetrics appointment. During our ongoing pregnancy follow-ups, we favour a human, customized approach to support you through this major step in your life. Ultrasound examinations are also available on site.

Obstetrics - Basic infertility check-up

Whether it’s taking you a while to get pregnant or you’ve had recurrent miscarriages, our women’s healthcare specialists can identify the various causes related to your case and will inform you on the best treatments available today.

Obstetrics - Abnormal bleeding

Abnormal bleeding can occur in multiple situations, at any age, and while pregnant or not. Abnormal bleeding can take many forms: hemorrhagic periods, dysfunctional bleeding, bleeding after sexual intercourse, postmenopausal bleeding, etc.

To clearly identify the issue causing the bleeding, your doctor will use a comprehensive questionnaire and do a physical examination to guide their research. Some additional tests may also be required, such as an STBBI screening test, endometrial biopsy, or ultrasound.

Obstetrics - Follow-up with the referring hospital

Avenir MD will take care of following up on your pregnancy with the designated doctor at the hospital in which you’ve chosen to deliver. You will meet the doctor who will deliver your child at least once during the third trimester of your pregnancy. As early as your first appointment at one of our clinics, our medical team will provide a detailed overview of this collaboration during the months leading up to delivery.

Menopause clinic

Menopause affects a significant number of women. They often find themselves unprepared when deciding whether to take hormone replacements or not. When this happens, booking an appointment with one of our gynecologists is a must.

The various symptoms of menopause are divided into three categories, depending on the hormone deficiency:

  • Estrogen deficiency

Causes hot flashes, myalgia, vulvovaginal dryness.

  • Progesterone deficiency

Causes insomnia, irritability, and sweating.

  • Testosterone deficiency

Causes memory loss and difficulty concentrating, loss of energy, and decreased libido.

Bioidentical hormone therapy

Bioidentical hormones allow women to have a better quality of life during menopause and perimenopause. If your gynecologist thinks you may benefit from bioidentical hormone therapy, they may prescribe it. Every woman responds differently to this treatment, which is why a detailed assessment and customized support are essential. If necessary, the treatment can be assisted by hormone level measurement.
